File Browser is a reminder that some problems were solved years ago and never needed to get complicated. It is a free, open-source web interface for a folder on your own server: point it at a directory, log in, and you can browse, preview, edit, upload, download, rename and share files from any browser. The reviewer behind the most-watched walkthrough in this set arrived after outgrowing Webmin and finding Nextcloud too much tool for the job, and his verdict was that it is tiny, light, efficient, and does everything he would normally do in a desktop file manager. The current release line, v2.63, ships as a single container image the reviewer measured at roughly fourteen megabytes, which is why it keeps appearing on Raspberry Pi projects, NAS boxes and everyday servers alike. Setup is a five-line compose file, and because no company stands behind it upselling, the whole feature set ships in the free download. For many homelab owners it has quietly replaced both FTP servers and the file managers bundled with NAS systems.

What it does well

One job, done cleanly: a complete file-manager feature set - upload, download, preview, edit, move, copy, delete - over any directory, plus share links for moments when a login is more than a friend needs.

Genuinely lightweight: one small Docker image or a single binary; the same deployment runs on a workstation, a NAS or a single-board machine, and community guides cover Unraid, TrueNAS and Portainer installs.

Real multi-user controls: admins create accounts with per-user scopes and granular permissions - download-only readers, editors without delete rights - which turns it into a controlled exchange point rather than an all-or-nothing FTP dump.

Who it's for

Homelab and NAS owners, developers sharing logs or build artifacts, and small teams that want a browser UI over server files without adopting a full cloud suite. If your need starts and ends at my files, in a browser, from anywhere - this is the shortest path. It also works as a handoff point for client files: create a scoped account, share the link, and revoke it when the job is done.

Where it falls short

It is not cloud storage. There is no sync client, no collaborative editing and no office suite; expectations borrowed from Dropbox will go unmet.

Security hygiene is on you. You are exposing a server folder to a network, so the sensible default is a reverse proxy with HTTPS and careful user scoping - configuration the project leaves to you.

The scope model takes a mental shift. Access rules bind to configured scopes rather than free wandering, so unusual directory layouts deserve planning before you invite users, and phones get the web UI rather than a native app.

Frequently asked questions

▸Is it a Google Drive replacement?

It replaces the file-browsing part - a web UI over your own folder - not sync clients or collaborative office editing. Pair it with other tools for those.

▸How do I install it?

A one-line docker run or a short compose file; a standalone binary also exists. Community guides cover Unraid, TrueNAS, Portainer and plain Docker.

▸How do I secure it?

Use the built-in authentication and per-user permissions, put it behind an HTTPS reverse proxy, and scope each user to the narrowest directory that does the job.

▸Can several people share one instance?

Yes. Admins create accounts with individual scopes and granular permissions - for example a guest who can only download via share links.
