Codeium — Retired — the Codeium extension is no longer maintained; its product address now serves Devin Desktop, Cognition's agentic coding platform.
What it is
A retired free AI coding assistant. Codeium shipped unlimited autocomplete, in-IDE chat and repository-wide natural-language search across dozens of editors, and was for years the default answer to "a free Copilot alternative". The product is no longer maintained and its address now serves Devin Desktop.
Editor's review
Long-form introduction by the BetterPicker editors · checked against the official site · Oct 23, 2026
Codeium is retired. The extension that once made it the default answer to "a free Copilot alternative" no longer ships updates, and the product address now points to Devin Desktop, Cognition's agentic coding platform. Why this page is still here: the tool was recommended for years, so old bookmarks and older articles still link to it. Keeping the page online avoids breaking those links while making the status plain. The rating that used to sit at the top of this page has been removed, because there is no live product left to rate. What to look at instead: Windsurf carries the same lineage with an editor-first workflow, Cursor adds deeper IDE integration on a paid plan, and Continue or Zed's assistant cover the open and local setups. If your goal is a free daily driver, pick one of those and judge it on your own repository.
